about
The Tragically Hip is one of Canada's national treasures (as we are told by fans who hear us play this song). We were even told once that it should be the national anthem.
The Tragically Hip is also one of Joshua Butcher’s top musical influences and he recalls a story from when he was a teen, “We were a pretty low-income household (and that is putting it lightly) and my mom was caring for me and my brother. I was about 15 and my brother was about 20 when we learned The Tragically Hip was playing in the bar literally one street away from our house.
My mother somehow scraped together $20 and sent us on our way to the show. My brother and I ran over as fast as we could only to find out it was a 21 and older show. What a drag! We were bummed out but to our delight we found out the local radio station KLPX had planned to play the entire show live on the radio. So we sat at home and imagined the whole performance just a few hundred feet away. I never did get to see them play before Gord Downie passed away but at least get to play some of their music”
